Restoring Knowledge: Building a Library for a Rural School in Matara
In 2024, together with my 2020 Building Services Technologies batch students, I embarked on yet another impactful social project, this time aimed at supporting a small rural school near Matara. During conversations with the school’s principal, we identified the school’s pressing need for a proper library to enhance access to educational resources for its students.
Inspired by this vision, my students and I undertook the challenge of restoring the library. Over several days, we transformed the space into a functional and inviting learning environment, ensuring that it could serve as a hub for knowledge and inspiration. Additionally, we took on the task of restoring some of the school’s artwork and drawings, rejuvenating its walls with vibrant visuals to create a more inspiring atmosphere for the children.
To further enrich the library, we donated a collection of new textbooks and learning materials, catering to students across all grade levels. As an added gesture of goodwill, my students arranged a special moment for the school’s youngest learners, presenting small gifts to the grade one children. The joy and excitement on their faces were heartwarming and reminded us all of the incredible impact even small acts of kindness can have.
This project stands out as one of the most thrilling and meaningful experiences in my journey of giving back to the community. It reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of education and the importance of creating opportunities for young minds to thrive. Working alongside my students and witnessing their dedication to this cause made the project not only a success but also an unforgettable chapter in our shared journey of social responsibility.
